I am always looking for ways to improve my productivity, because time is very important to me. I want to spend quality time with my family, and when at work, produce positive results. There are habits that one can develop to help them manage their time better. There is also a plethora of software that one can use to make better use of their time. I previously wrote a post titled, How to Improve Your Productivity with 12 Mobile Apps. In that post, I wrote about twelve mobile apps that I use to be more productive in life. However, it does not always have to be tool that helps us be more productive. It can also be a change in perspective on how to view tasks and determine what can be done to lower the repetition of those tasks.
The other day I was listening to Grant Baldwin's podcast, How Did You Get into That, with guest Rory Vaden. During the show, Rory brings up the concept of Return On Time Investment (ROTI) where automating tasks into your time is as compounding interest on your money. He gives an example where one can set up electronic bill pay for an account in order to save time paying a bill in the future. Essentially, spend more time today on automating a task as much as possible in order to spend a significantly less time doing that task in the future. Time is an important currency and look for ways to not have to spend it as much on a commonly occurring task.
I have worked at places where a task might be to produce a report on a monthly basis based off of a Crystal Reports file. This would involve opening the file every month, sometimes making adjustments to the parameters of the report, running the report, and then emailing it to those who need it. This is not challenging work and the task is practically the same every month, but it still takes time to complete. Wouldn't it be better if it could be automated completely where you don't have to deal with it every month?
I know I wanted the extra time focusing on something else. Crystal Reports is a reporting product from SAP and I have found it that most organizations who have Crystal Reports also have SAP's Business Objects which is a platform to schedule reports. It does take some time to schedule a report, because you have to configure various settings from the file format of the report to the email that sends the report to all the recipients. However, the time invested in scheduling and configuring the reports in Business Objects is well worth it. After you set it all up, you can in a sense forget about it as it runs on its own every month.
This can be a powerful improvement to your available free time, because now you can do something else more meaningful.
- Implementing ROTI can be applied to tasks of varying complexity.
- ROTI is a time management approach focused on spending more time today on automating a task in order to create more free time for the future.
- A lot of productivity tools can help you be more efficient with time, but what you must remember to do is use them in a manner where you can multiply more free time for yourself.
Time is our most valuable resource and the key is to spend it in a meaningful way as much as possible.
